Another 4th of July

Once again we have come to the 4th of July. As a child this was a fun day of running along the beach and eating steamed clams with cold Cokes. Sparklers were always around and when we ran out we simply captured fireflies in a jar and ran around with that. Simple times and simple minds out on the edge of Long Island.
Out in Michigan there will be lots of fireworks and noise. Not much fun at my age and it will scare the horses. Perhaps the balloons will race again across the lawn. Who knows? But today I must finish the Nesta Webster part of the dissertation. It will take some doing but it will get done.
Would love to ride out with Deusey but will probably not get the time. Must dash for now!

Immigrant Blogging

This is my first attempt at blogging. In cyberspace I am an immigrant not a native. The Internet for my students is home ground. They have come of age in a period where it is central to their lives both socially and professionally. Sad to say I still speak the language of cyberspace with a heavy accent and questionable syntax. I have yet to text, do not own a blackberry and do not feel unable to function without an ipod. No doubt these things would enhance my life, but there would be a cost. Blogging will be my attempt to enter this new world. There was a time when television was not universal and my coming of age dovetailed with its cementing its position as a stable of American life, for better or for worse. The Internet has surpassed it as a venue of news, entertainment and commerce and one must move on.
Tomorrow I will attempt to set up the site.
